India Day, A Community Fair is being celebrated on August 12th at beautiful campus of HACC in Harrisburg. It is the best way to experience India in one day right here in Central Pennsylvania. The fair will include vendors selling ethnic food, Indian apparel, jewelry, art work, ornaments and much more; local businesses that provide services such as legal, insurance, real estate, health care, financial; activities for kids of all ages such as bouncy house, face painting, toy painting, chess, sit and draw competition, book reading etc.
The rich Indian culture has been created over the past 5000+ years and the foundation is its traditional values, multiple religions, music, dance and food. India as you know is the largest secular democracy in the world with more than 1.2 billion people. At India Day community fair we showcase the food of different regions of the country, festivals people celebrate, their arts and handicrafts and businesses that have been built by local community. The fair is an effort to present the vibrant and diverse culture of India.
As Indian cuisine varies from region to region, likewise the outfits of people vary from area to area. Saree, a traditional and most common outfit worn by women, is worn in different styles in different parts of the country. Some of the other popular outfits include salwar kurta with dupatta (like a scarf), lahanga, etc. Traditional Indian jewelry is made in gold but now both diamond and artificial jewelry are commonly used. When you visit India Day community fair, you will be able to experience the wide range of India food from local restaurants and also explore and buy India outfits and jewelry from both local vendors and vendors visiting us from NJ, VA, etc.
Indian music and dance are an ancient and celebrated cultural tradition of India. Different forms of music are classical music, folk, instrumental, and now Bollywood. People typically perform folk dances during festivals and the dance form, style and music changes as you travel across the country. When you visit India, you can find people dancing at festivals and weddings in large numbers. Some of the classical dance forms are Bharatnatyam; Kathak, Kuchipudi, bhangra, etc.
Visitors to the India Day, a Community Fair will experience the food, dance, music and many other Indian traditions right here in Central PA at beautiful campuses of HACC in Harrisburg. We expect large participation from our local communities. Last year India Day was attended by over 12,000 people.
